His [Adjutant, Joe Hardie] mother, through him, sends a message to me to call on her for anything I need in the way of clothes and so forth….so if the Yankees return don’t bother about me for my friends will take care of me.

 ANN ELIZA GARY HARDIE (M.1)

Ann Eliza Hardie and her children spent the Civil War years  in Tuskegee, probably living with her mother.

[Three children of John T. and Ann Eliza Gary Hardie, John Newton Hardie, (1.3), 1859-1860,  Ann Eliza Hardie (11.5), 1862-1863, and an un-named child (1864?) are buried in the Tuskegee City Cemtery]

 MARGARET DISCRETION ISBELL HARDIE (M.3)

[Joseph and Margaret Discretion Isbell Hardie]  ….became great benefactors and liberal supporters of Tuskegee Institute. They entertained Booker T. Washington in their own home at Selma…..At the time of her death in California, the Los Angeles newspaper headline read: “FRIEND OF NEGRO DIES HERE.”

 ELLA FRIERSON HARDIE (M.6)

William Tipton Hardie was married on 20 January 1870 in New Orleans to Ella Frierson….daughter of William J. Frierson and Leanora O. Dobbins Frierson……William and Ella Hardie had eight children, seven sons and finally a daughter. One son died a child………before Mr. Hardie’s own death, four of his own sons had preceded him to the grave.

 ELIZABETH DARBY MALLORY HARDIE (M.7)

Beside their own children, Alva’s sister Mary Isabella’s daughter Isabella Bradford (Belle) (4.8) lived with them for a time in Dallas after her parents’ deaths……”Aunt Lizzie ….. has been so greatly harassed that I fear she lets Belle and Kate do largely as they see proper.”

 LEILA HARDIE MOORE (1.11)

Robert [Moore] came to New Orleans and fell in love with the beautiful Leila Hardie.

  ISABELLA HARDIE BARKLEY (1.12)

[Isabella or Belle] was queen of the Comus carnival ball in 1898……After their marriage in 1900 Isabella and Henderson Barkley lived at Ellington Plantation, near Luling, Louisiana. “The only way to reach their home was by steamboat up river from New Orleans”.

 ALVA HARDIE BRADFORD MEADE (4.11)

She went to the Taylor School in Birmingham…..She was one of only two girls allowed to attend. She took the examinations for entering Wellesley College and passed with flying colors…. She was a firm believer in Christian values…..and a fiercely partisan member of the Democratic party, insisting once on voting even though she had to be taken to the polling place in an ambulance.

 HANEE JANE HARDIE SLEEPER (9.9)

Hanee Hardie Sleeper….for many years, the last living grandchild of John [and Mary Mead Hall] Hardie of Thornhill, died on 20 February 1989 at Waco, Texas. She was the ninth child of the ninth child of John [and Mary Mead Hall] Hardie, and would have been 99 on August 11.

GENERATION THREE

LEILA HARDIE MOORE WILLIAMS (1.11.3) 

In 1938 [Kemper and Leila Hardie Moore Williams] bought two properties in the French Quarter—the Merieult House   on Royal Street and a late 19th-century residence contiguous to the Merieult House, facing Toulouse Street. The latter property was their home for 17 years, during which time they amassed a substantial collection of important Louisiana artifacts—the founding holdings of The Historic New Orleans Collection.

 JOSEPHINE JEFFRIES CUNNINGHAM (2.4.1)

In 1909 at age 17 Josephine Jeffries made a European trip, which included visits to Hardie relatives in Scotland. married....to Lt. Alfred Austell Cunningham, USMC, who was the first United States Marine aviator, in World War I….They were both buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

 ELIZABETH BRADFORD KIMBROUGH (4.10.1)

She graduated from Judson College in Marion, Alabama. She was married on 5 June, 1930 in Uniontown to William Adams Kimbrough.

 ANNA HARDEMAN MEADE MINNIGERODE (4.11.1)

It is hard to imagine the world without Anna. She was the vital center of attention wherever she was. She was vivid. “She lit up the room.” She was unique. She will be missed exceedingly, and her memory will always be an inspiration.
