2021 – VERMONT

2021 ANNUAL MEETING & HARDIE FAMILY REUNION – LANDGROVE, VERMONT

COLUMBUS DAY WEEKEND   –   OCTOBER 8 – 10, 2021

Due to Covid-19 circumstances, we had to postpone the Annual Hardie Family Reunion. This past year, for our 2020 Annual Meeting and Family Reunion we planned to do something different.  Little did we know that this year would be different indeed. We hope to follow through this year – venturing to New England and shifting our meeting dates to enjoy the Fall colors in Vermont. The Annual Meeting of the Thornhill Foundation was held in the Dining Room of our Reunion Headquarters, The Landgrove Inn in Landgrove, Vermont, on Saturday, October 9th, 2020 in conjunction with the Annual Hardie Family Reunion which took place from Friday, October 8th through Sunday, October 10th, 2021.

Why, you might ask did we go to Vermont? Is there any Hardie connection in Vermont? “Yes” is the answer. For years two Hardie families called Landgrove, Vermont their home away from home. The Gwinn and Martin families, who lived across the creek from one another in Connecticut, purchased “weekend” homes (across the creek from one another) in a picturesque valley surrounded by gently rolling mountains. Much further up the road in the “Northeast Kingdom”, Todd Hardie has established Thornhill Farm where he tends his bees, grows winter rye and barley, harvests elderberries and generally takes care of the land. We were welcomed, entertained and educated by these Hardie families represented by Susan and Al Goetze as our hosts and Todd Hardie who shared with us the story of his bees, his cherished Thornhill Farm, and Caledonia Spirits which he founded and in which he continues to be involved. Todd is making Thornill Farm rye whiskey with Caledonia Spirits, continuing the tradition of J. & W. Hardie, founded over 130 years ago in Scotland. For those interested, he drew some bottles of whiskey out of the barrels at Caledonia Spirits for an R & D session at the reunion! Click on this link for more on Caledonia Spirits.
